Lucy Guanuna is a freelance reporter covering the greater Los Angeles area. She is a regular contributor to KCET and the Eastsider L.A.
After years of community organizing, Lucy realized the best way to draw attention to issues facing marginalized communities was by reporting on them in an objective, yet critical manner.
With the goal of someday reporting from overseas, she spent holidays backpacking and trekking through the Middle East, Africa, Latin America and Europe. Experiencing other cultures firsthand, helped her to better understand how political and religious issues shape the local culture and social movements in their respective countries, which she reflects through her reporting.
In 2014, she began her first international freelance reporting project in Brazil. She covered underage sex work, in light of the World Cup. With limited resources, she hired a fixer to help her navigate Brazil's chaotic bureaucratic system as well as Brazil's criminal underbelly. She was able to capture creditable sources through photo, video and audio that was then transcribed from Portuguese to English by a professional translator.
