Lucy Guanuna is a freelance reporter at the Eastsider L.A., one of Los Angeles' largest neighborhood news websites.
After years of community organizing, Lucy realized the best way to draw attention to issues facing marginalized communities was by reporting on them in an objective, yet critical manner.
With the goal of ultimately reporting internationally, she spent holidays backpacking and trekking through the Middle East, Africa, South America and Europe. Experiencing other cultures firsthand, helped her to better understand how political and religious issues shape local cultures and social movements, which she reflects through her reporting.
In January, she began her first international freelance reporting project in Brazil. She covered issues of feminist street art and underage sex work, in light of the World Cup. With limited resources, she hired a fixer to help her navigate Brazil's chaotic bureaucratic system as well as Brazil's criminal underbelly. She was able to capture creditable sources through photo, video and audio that was then transcribed to english by a hired translator.
